GROWING PAINS: FROM marvel boy TO QUASAR

GROWING PAINS: FROM marvel boy TO QUASAR

I am expecting the marvel Cinematic universe (MCU) to become more cosmic as time elapses.  There are only so many stories that you can tell on earth with earthlings.  There are cosmic threats that are always coming for us, artifacts of terrific power ready to be discovered, and alien beings looking to use earth as a stepping stone to galactic domination.  We just need to be told their stories.  The Quantum Bands are one such weapon that may be waiting for a person to bestow their power to.  now the question becomes who may become Quasar?

Quasar made his first appearance in Captain America #217, in 1977.  Wendell Vaughn was a shield recruit who was given superpowers by the Quantum Bands.  He first takes on the name marvel Boy, and following some uncomfortable hair growth and a voice change, he shortly thereafter becomes marvel Man.  Ultimately, in the pages of incredible Hulk #234 Vaughn changes his name to Quasar.

Copies of Captain America #217 have been incredibly sought after when arriving on the market.  A couple of 9.8 graded books that hit auctions in the past few months have offered for over $1,600 each.  This is quite the departure from the fair Market value (FMV) of $550, that this book held just a short while ago.  Each iteration of this book seems to be more desirable and they go for a higher price than the previous sold.  With only 19 copies listed at the 9.8 grade on the census, it is fair to see why.

Quasar is a character that has been based around the Quantum Bands and several people have taken the mantel of Quasar in the marvel Universe.  Besides Wendell Vaughn, this includes Phyla-Vell (a once former Captain Marvel) and Richard Rider (the former Nova).  If the MCU were to introduce the Quantum Bands they could really slap them on just about anyone and make a convincing character out of it.  due to the tie-in with Phyla-Vell, it would be easy to introduce that character in Captain marvel 2 or an upcoming Guardians movie and make reference to the Quantum Bands in either plot.  This would allow you, at minimum, to plant the seeds of Quasar and make a decision about where you want to go with it in the future.

Earth is boring, Asgard is destroyed, and we have explored a few more of the 9 realms with little excitement, so what is left out there to explore besides the bottom of the sea (more on that in a future blog) and exciting new locations around the galaxy?  It is time to put your maps to good use, Marvel.  Take me somewhere I’ve never been and let Quasar be my guide.  I know what you are thinking Marvel…I don’t want to interrupt your plans to restore Ronan the Accuser for the umpth time.  Or perhaps you paid with a bunch of hot pockets to the dudes in the room working on the script that includes a teenage Thanos as the villain, but you need to come up with something better.

Do you feel Quasar would be a terrific addition to the MCU?  Is there another unlikely character you are hoping will be developed?  drop your comments and join the speculation!
